Palmetto Publishing has released Letters from an Establishment Republican – A Guide for Protecting and Preserving the Republic by Marty Morris, a veteran Republican operative who spent a quarter century at the center of American governance. Morris, a fourth-generation Hoosier who served as Chief of Staff to the late Senator Richard G. Lugar of Indiana, opens the book with a clarion assertion that the brand of Republicanism targeted for elimination by Donald Trump will “inevitably be called back into political and public policy leadership, probably sooner than later,” predicting that “the arc of this aberrant political cycle will begin to close.” In a style that is sure to drive MAGA devotees into a Twitter rage, Morris calmly dismisses them by simply presuming their demise. In 58 digestible common-sense letters, he provides a roadmap for discovering (or re-discovering) the basics and innate power of Establishment Republicanism. This book is a manual for both younger Americans who may not have previously identified as Republicans and those who would identify as Republican were it not for current extreme political division. It will also appeal to disenchanted Baby Boom Republicans who long for a Republican Party that represents their ideals and principles.
The stakes Morris lays out are not abstract. Constitutional governance, fiscal discipline, principled foreign policy, and the tradition of compromise as democratic machinery are all, in his telling, at genuine risk of permanent erosion. Veteran operatives have lost their guideposts. First-time candidates lack a playbook. College students drawn to public service recoil from the spectacle. Morris argues that disengagement is itself a form of surrender, and that the longer principled Republicans stay on the sidelines, the harder the return becomes.
Structured as an epistolary field guide, the book moves from political philosophy to granular, practical advice with unusual range. Individual letters tackle the federal budget, the Middle East, China, Russia, healthcare, Super PACs, artificial intelligence, gun control, and more. Morris draws on his experience directing four U.S. Senate campaigns and teaching the "Campaigns to Congress" course at Duke University. The tone shifts fluidly between cheerful mentorship and resolute argument, offering not nostalgia for a lost era but a working blueprint for reclaiming the party's principled center.
The book’s core audience is college-educated, politically interested readers of any age who already instinctively know, but are afraid to say, that Trumpism can’t possibly survive. This little political gem goes bravely where no one else has dared to go and gives readers the basic tools to participate in the coming restoration of leadership by Establishment Republicans. The format of individual letters by subject makes it ideal for course adoption in political science and public policy programs.
Letters from an Establishment Republican is available for purchase online at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.
